Vol. 386 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hormone Exclusion Order.

38.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food, in view of the threatened trade war between the USA and the EC in relation to the hormone exclusion order at present in operation in some countries in the EC, the plans he has to ensure that the leading role which this country has played in the abolition of hormones in meat production will be rewarded in terms of financial return to producers.

The ban on the use of hormones for growth promotion which applies throughout the EC Community stems from a Community decision aimed at meeting the demands of consumers in the EC.

There are, however, market advantages in producing prime quality residue free meat and I am determined that the perception of Irish meat, as pure, wholesome and produced in a natural and clean environment, will continue to be utilised as a major selling point on the market, with consequential benefits to the producer.

I have, of course, advised producers on many occasions that any irresponsible misuse of hormones or other prohibited products can only be detrimental to their own best interests.
