Vol. 386 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - FÁS Services.

12.

asked the Minister for Labour if any decision has been taken on the statement made in Dáil Éireann in May 1988, that FÁS were at the time, reviewing their training advisory service to industry and that decisions on the future of these services were to be taken in light of that review.

The review mentioned by me in the Dáil on 5 May 1988, related to administrative arrangements for the provision of a training advisory service to industry and is, therefore, a day to day matter for FÁS. I would suggest therefore that the Deputy contact FÁS direct in the matter.

I am somewhat surprised that the Minister should tell me now to contact FÁS with regard to this matter because I understood this was the direct responsibility of the Minister.

As I understand my responsibilities I do not answer questions in the House about the day to day operations of FÁS. However, I do answer questions with relation to policy or budgetary matters. If the Deputy requires data I can let him have such.

The Minister will agree that we are talking about £4.7 million being funded by the Exchequer. How on earth can FÁS give me the information I seek when we are talking about a financial implication which is the responsibility of the Minister concerned?

The Deputy's question asked if any decision had been taken on the statement made in Dáil Éireann in May 1988 that FÁS were, at the time, reviewing their training advisory service to industry and so on. There have been decisions taken which I mentioned. I already answered that question some time ago but if the Deputy requires the information I am prepared to provide it.
