Vol. 386 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Funding.

68.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make arrangements for the provision of funding for primary schools to cover outlay incurred in respect of health charges levied where children have to be taken direct from school to hospital casualty departments.

It would be in accordance with general practice in cases of this kind that any hospital charges be levied on the parents. This procedure avoids difficulties in relation to the payment of a charge where there is no liability e.g. for dependants of medical card holders. Any such costs involved would not be considered an appropriate charge on my Department's funds.

69.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the number of pupils attending the second level school in the Skerries area, County Dublin, she will provide sufficient funding to enable the school to include German as a full time subject option.

70.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the number of pupils attending the second level school in the Skerries area, County Dublin, she will provide sufficient funding to enable the school to appoint a full time teacher of physical education.

I propose to take Questions Nos.69 and 70 together.

At present my Department are paying for 30 part time teaching hours per week, the equivalent of 1.5 posts, in excess of the authorised quota in this school. These hours are being funded partly to facilitate the provision of physical education in the school.

I am aware of the benefits of providing a second modern continental language on school curricula and this is a matter which is at present under consideration in my Department. The question of providing for the teaching of German in this school will be considered in this context.
