Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Natural Gas.

160.

asked the Minister for Energy the reason County Kerry has been deprived of natural gas from the Kinsale gas field; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Significant State resources have been invested in the development of the natural gas network, with the prime objective being the maximisation of economic benefit derived from this valuable natural resource. Bord Gáis Éireann, as the State body charged with the development and distribution of indigenous gas resources, has the responsibility for evaluation of proposals for the supply of natural gas to particular areas.

BGE is a commercial body, and as such must make commercial decisions on all development projects. The main considerations in determining the economic feasibility of making supplies of natural gas available to any area include the presence of an existing gas network; the availability of a commercially viable market; and proximity to the main trunk-line.

As there have been no commercial proposals to date for the supply of natural gas to Kerry, an in-depth study by BGE is not warranted at this time.
