Vol. 388 No. 10

Written Answers. - Community Policing Experiment.

16.

asked the Minister for Justice the assessment which has been done on the impact of the recent community policing experiment in Tallaght, Dublin 24; if, in view of the positive reaction to it by the local community, it is intended to make it permanent; if, in view of its success, he will consider introducing similar arrangements in other parts of the city; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the community policing scheme established in the Tallaght area is the subject of continuing review to assess its contribution to local policing. The authorities say that initial public reaction to the scheme has been very favourable and that it will continue to operate in Tallaght for the foreseeable future. Its effectiveness will continue to be measured over the longer term.

The community policing scheme is now in operation on a pilot basis in selected subdistricts of four of the five Garda divisions of the Dublin Metropolitan Area. The Garda authorities are encouraged by its success and are currently considering an extension of the scheme to other subdistricts in the area.
