Vol. 388 No. 10

Written Answers. - Juvenile Prisoners.

17.

asked the Minister for Justice if the number of juvenile prisoners in St. Patrick's Institution, Dublin 7, has increased over the past 12 months; the average stay of each prisoner in that institution for the same period; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The average daily population in St. Patrick's Institution in March 1988 was 230. In March 1989 it was 234. There has not been a significant increase in the numbers being accommodated there over the past 12 months.

The information sought in relation to the average stay of each offender in the institution is not readily available. To obtain it an examination of the individual records of each offender released during the period in question would be necessary. This would involve a disproportionate expenditure of staff time.

The Annual Report on Prisons and Places of Detention sets out the trend in committals to St. Patrick's Institution classified by length of sentence. These figures for 1988 are being complied at present and will be included in the annual report for that year.
