Vol. 388 No. 10

Written Answers. - Garda Prosecutions.

33.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda prosecutions in the District and Circuit Courts in the years (i) 1987 and (ii) 1988; and the number of Garda hours spent in prosecuting court cases.

Information in relation to criminal prosecutions is set out in the Garda Commissioner's annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The report contains particulars of indictable offences dealt with on indictment (nearly all of which are tried in the Circuit Court) as well as of indictable offences dealt with summarily and non-indictable offences dealt with summarily tried in the District Court). The report for 1988 will be published within the next few months and a copy will be placed in the Library.

The information sought in relation to the number of Garda hours involved in prosecuting court cases is not readily available and could be compiled only by the commitment of a disproportionate amount of Garda time and effort.
