Vol. 388 No. 10

Written Answers. - Garda Promotions.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of promotions and at what levels in the Garda Síochána which are proposed to be made in the near future; and the divisions in which these promotions will be made.

The total number of promotions arising will depend on wastage from the force, which cannot be accurately forecast, and the levels at which promotions will be made will depend on the requirements of the different ranks, as determined by the Commissioner at any particular time. Accordingly it is not possible to give specific figures for the different promotions that may take place or the times when they will occur.

Promotions are made on a force-wide basis and it is the Garda Commissioner who decides on the assignment of promoted members to particular divisions or units as the exigencies of providing a policing service dictate.
