Vol. 389 No. 2

Written Answers. - Food Industry.

60.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the steps he proposes to take in conjunction with the EC Structural Funds to promote the growth of the food industry in Ireland and to switch the emphasis from commodity intervention type product to consumer tailored product with all the added value that this switch would entail.

A central objective of the Government's policy for the food industry is to increase the value added. The measures to achieve that objective are set out in the strategy for the food and drinks industry 1988-1992 proposed by the IDA in consultation with my Department and in the National Development plan 1989-1993. The plan envisages a substantial increase in financial support from FEOGA Guidance Section to assist the industry to realise its development potential.
