Vol. 389 No. 3

Order of Business (Resumed).

What plans has the Taoiseach for the processing of the Finance Bill in this House? Does he intend it will proceed in the normal course or has he any other plans?

(Interruptions.)

A Deputy

Is the Deputy worried?

I would like to know——

The Deputy will find another way of raising that matter.

——whether the Taoiseach has come to any conclusion about the way the Finance Bill should be handled or whether he has any other adventures in mind in the meantime.

The arrangements for the Finance Bill are in place but, fortunately, the statutory provisions give me total flexibility which I shall use as I decide is appropriate.

Would that flexibility to which the Taoiseach refers include his contemplation of any provisions to attempt to foreshorten debate on the Finance Bill?

The Deputy will be among the first to know.

And when the guillotine comes down, the Taoiseach's head will be the first one on the block.

(Interruptions.)

Tokyo this week, Dublin next week.

I seek permission to raise on the Adjournment the question of the unfortunate sad death of another young person in custody, at Longford Garda Station on Tuesday evening last. He will be the eighth person to die in custody since the beginning of 1988.

I will be in touch with the Deputy concerning that matter.

(Limerick East): In view of the fact that there has been no funding of the Government's borrowing requirement in the second quarter domestically, would the Minister for Finance, to remove the uncertainty — make a clear statement of the Government's policy on interest rates——

That is not in order now, Deputy Noonan and you know that full well.

(Limerick East): A Cheann Comhairle——

Sorry, Deputy, you may not pursue the matter.

(Limerick East): I am asking if the Taoiseach will arrange for the Minister for Finance to make a statement in the House to remove the uncertainty——

The Deputy will have to find another way of raising that matter.

(Limerick East): A Cheann Comhairle——

Deputy Noonan must desist.

Ba mhaith liom staid Gairm Scoil Cholmcille in Indreabhán, Contae na Gaillimhe, a thógaint suas agus an géarghá atá le riachtanaisí a chur ar fáil do na daltaí agus na muinteoirí.

Gheobhaidh tú freagra uaim ar ball, a Theachta.

On 12 April last the Taoiseach told the House that on the lower river crossing in Cork there was going to be a bridge. When will that information be conveyed officially to Cork Corporation so that work on it can be got underway?

That is not one for the Order of Business.

There is so much speculation, so many questions——

Please, Deputy Barry.

(Interruptions.)

Including the expertise in building bridges.

They told us on 12 April there was to be a bridge.

I would like to raise on the Adjournment the subject matter of Question No. 59 on yesterday's Order Paper.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

For the third time I request to raise on the Adjournment the circumstances whereby the bodies of two psychiatric patients were found in the vicinity of a psychiatric hospital last week.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

Following the decision last night of the Dáil in relation to haemophiliacs infected with HIV virus, let me ask the Taoiseach what the Government's intention is in this regard.

That matter does not arise on the Order of Business.

Let me ask the Taoiseach when it is intended to take Committee Stage of the Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited (Amendment) Bill, in view of the fact that we have no State——

The Deputy need not elaborate now. He has posed the question. It is legislation promised.

The legislation is on the Order Paper and will be taken in due course by agreement with the Whips.

I seek permission to raise on the Adjournment the question of the adequacy of the sums provided for Dublin Corporation for their refurbishment scheme this year and the needs for next year with particular reference to the Ballymun area.

I will be in touch with the Deputy concerning that matter.

I propose to raise on the Adjournment the extension of the area designated for urban renewal in Athlone.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the failure of the Government to implement the recommendations of the all-party committee on the distribution of lottery funds.

I will be in touch with the Deputy concerning the matter.
