Vol. 390 No. 2

Written Answers. - Knocklyon Community School.

36.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that as a result of recent planning decisions given by Dublin County Council, approximately 1,000 new houses are to be built in the Knocklyon area, County Dublin; whether, in light of the substantial increase in the population and, in particular, the school going population of Knocklyon which will result from these developments, she will sanction the construction of Knocklyon community school; and if she will have a meeting with Knocklyon Post-Primary Committee this month to discuss the new position.

My Department are aware of housing developments in the Knocklyon area. However, the proposed developments are not on a scale which would warrant the construction of a further post primary school. Demand for post primary accommodation arising from the proposed housing will not materialise until the first decade of the next century. At that stage the incidence of surplus accommodation will be even greater than at present.

I am satisfied that a meeting with Knocklyon Post Primary Committee would serve no useful purpose at this time. My Department will continue to monitor developments in the area to ensure that there will continue to be adequate accessible post-primary accommodation for pupils from the Knocklyon area.
