Vol. 390 No. 4

Written Answers. - Situation in Philippines.

36.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on the current situation in the Philippines; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that tear gas was thrown at an Irish citizen among others participating in the recent May Day celebrations in the Philippines.

Ireland supports the efforts of President Aquino and her Government to consolidate constitutional democracy in the Philippines, revive the economy and bring about national reconciliation. I hope that with its regained stability, the Republic of the Philippines will be able to sustain economic recovery and safeguard human rights with the co-operation and for the benefit of the entire population. The Twelve have indicated their willingness, in so far as possible, to contribute actively to that recovery.

I am not aware of the incident to which the Deputy refers. If he provides me with further details I will look into the matter.
