Vol. 390 No. 4

Written Answers. - GMS Generic Prescriptions.

96.

Mr. O'Malley

asked the Minister for Health the percentage of prescriptions which are written generically in the General Medical Service; and the comparative figure for the National Health Service in Britain.

Figures supplied by the General Medical Services (Payments) Board indicate that 12 per cent of General Medical Service prescriptions are written generically.

Figures for the United Kingdom indicate that 39 per cent of prescriptions in the National Health Service are written generically.

A national drugs formulary, prepared by a joint working group of officers of my Department and the Irish Medical Organisation will be published shortly. Use of the formulary should encourage increased prescribing of generics by general practitioners.
