Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - South Leinster Coal Fields.

164.

andMr. Hogan asked the Minister for Energy the progress, if any, he has to report on negotiations with interested parties on the future of the South Leinster coal fields in Counties Kilkenny, Laois and Carlow; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Applications for State mining leases in County Kilkenny have been received in respect of coal reserves at four locations — Crutt, Croghtenclogh, Aghamucky/ Coolbawn and Gorteen. In County Laois a proposal for the development of coal reserves at Turra/Drumagh and an application for mining lease at Slatt Upper are also under consideration.

Whilst a number of these potential developments are at an advanced stage of consideration it is not possible at this juncture to say when mining operations will commence at any of the locations.
