Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - BCG Vaccine Availability.

305.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the widespread shortage of BCG vaccine for infants in paediatric units throughout the country; and the steps, if any, he proposes taking to alleviate this problem.

A shortage of BCG vaccine occurred earlier this year because the suppliers of the vaccine were forced to temporarily cease supply of the vaccine due to a fire in their premises. The Department of Health quickly made alternative arrangements with another supplier of the vaccine, who has supplied a total of 40,000 doses since August 1989 and is making arrangements to supply a further 20,000 doses shortly. This supplier has also a further 30,000 doses available, if required.
