Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Clare School.

332.

asked the Minister for Education if special consideration is given to disadvantaged areas when dealing with applications for additional teachers in primary schools; and if this criteria was applied in the case of an application made by the Chairman of the Board of Management of St. Senan's primary school, Kilrush, County Clare.

The staffing of national schools is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement reached between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery.

The position of schools serving disadvantaged areas is dealt with separately. My Department operate two schemes to assist such schools. The first provides grant assistance and the second additional teaching assistance in the form of a concessionary post.

The school authorities were given sanction on 29 September 1989 to appoint a ninth assistant to the school as the appointment was warranted by enrolment on 30 September 1988. The school has applied for inclusion in the special scheme for schools serving disadvantaged areas.
