Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Additional Teacher for Boys' School.

349.

asked the Minister for Education if she will take steps to provide an additional teacher for an inner city boys school (details supplied) in Dublin 8 which caters for 125 boys in a very deprived area and which has only three permanent teachers and the service of a remedial teacher three days per week.

The staffing of the school in question comprises of four teachers (principal plus three assistants).

The staffing of national schools is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement reached between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. In the case of this school there were 127 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1988 which warrants a staff of principal plus three assistants for the school year 1989-90. Under these arrangements the appointment of a fourth assistant is not warranted.

The question as to whether the school may be allowed a concession under the arrangements for disadvantaged areas will receive attention.
