Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin School Staffing.

385.

asked the Minister for Education if she has received a request from the principal of St. Laurence O'Toole primary school, Seville Place, Dublin 1 to create an additional temporary position for their substitute teacher; and, in view of the severe social problems and difficult environment of the Sheriff Street area which the school serves, if she will favourably respond to this request.

St. Laurence O'Toole Primary School consists of six staff (principal plus two assistants, two concessionary posts and one remedial teacher).

The staffing of national schools is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement reached between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. In the case of St. Laurence O'Toole Senior Boys school there were 90 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1988 which actually warrants a staff of principal plus two assistants.

The creation of an additional temporary position in the school is not warranted under the present staffing schedules.
