asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the major developments taking place in Hungary, the Government will arrange to have an Irish diplomatic representative at either ambassador or consular level resident in Budapest in the next year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

We warmly welcome recent developments in Hungary aimed at bringing about a pluralist society there.
Ireland's Ambassador to Austria is concurrently accredited to Hungary. Our network of resident diplomatic representation is small and must remain so for the foreseeable future given our limited financial and personnel resources. Possibilities for its extension are examined from time to time in the light of our national and international interests and the availability of the necessary resources. Similar considerations limit the ability to increase Ireland's Consular representation at the present time.
