Vol. 392 No. 4

Written Answers. - Report on Elderly.

163.

asked the Minister for Health the proposals, if any, he intends to implement from a report issued by his Department concerning the elderly (details supplied).

The health boards have been asked to prepare plans to implement the recommendations of the report The Years Ahead — A Policy for the Elderly. These plans will form the basis for improving services for the elderly in coming years. Some recommendations of the report, particularly those concerning improved co-ordination of services, can be implemented without additional resources. Others will be implemented as resources permit.

The Years Ahead made recommendations about the need to update the current legislation governing nursing homes. The Health (Nursing Homes) Bill, 1989, which implements these recommendations was circulated to the Dáil recently. Second Stage of the Bill will be taken shortly.
