asked the Minister for Education the number of permanent appointments which were made in the post-primary sector for the academic years (a) 1987-88, (b) 1988-89 and (c) 1989-90 in the following sectors (i) secondary schools, (ii) community and comprehensive schools and (iii) vocational schools.

In the case of secondary schools no permanent appointments of lay teachers were made in 1987-88 pending the introduction of the redeployment scheme for lay secondary teachers. Apart from teachers appointed under the terms of the redeployment scheme the number of appointments made to permanent posts in 1988-89 and 1989-90 was 84 and 147, respectively.
In relation to community and comprehensive schools the position is as follows: 1987-88 26 permanent appointments sanctioned; 1988-89 12 permanent appointments sanctioned; 1989-90 (to date) 8 permanent appointments sanctioned.
In the case of the vocational sector the position is: 1987-88 111 permanent appointments sanctioned; 1988-89 7 permanent appointments sanctioned. I am not yet in a position to give a figure for 1989-90 in the case of the vocational education sector.
