asked the Taoiseach the number of houses in each county at the most recent census.
Written Answers. - Housing Statistics.
The numbers of private households in each county at the 1986 Census of Population, together with a disaggregation by type of housing unit, are shown in Table A. Housing units may contain more than one private household and the precise number of housing units involved is not available.
Table B gives details in respect of housing units which were vacant or from which the occupiers were absent on census night. The details have been compiled on the basis of an analysis of the background working documents used by the enumerators at the census. When delivering the census forms prior to the census the enumerators were required to note whether a dwelling was vacant or whether the occupants were likely to be absent on census night. In the case of vacant dwellings an indication was required as to whether, in the opinion of the enumerator, the dwelling was habitable or not. The purpose of this task was to ensure as complete an enumeration as possible since the enumerator was required to return to all these dwellings to verify the position when the census forms were being collected.
The first three columns of Table B relate to housing units described by the enumerators as being "habitable", while the final two columns relate to housing units being renovated or newly under construction but not yet habitable on census night. Not included in the table are details of housing units in a dilapidated or vandalised condition, unfit for habitation.
