Vol. 392 No. 7

Written Answers. - Medical Students.

163.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the hardship being caused by her Department's failure to assist grant-aided students at the College of Surgeons, Dublin 2 in a similar fashion to medical students attending other third level colleges; if she has any plans to remedy this anomaly; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Grant-aided students attending the College of Surgeons are eligible for maintenance grant on the same basis as students attending other third levels institutions. In the case of the grant in respect of lecture fees there is a general upper limit of £1,630 in 1989-90 which may be exceeded to the extent necessary to cover the total lecture fees in certain courses including those in the medical faculties in the constituent colleges of the National University of Ireland and in Trinity College, Dublin. This provision does not apply to the College of Surgeons. I have no plans at present to alter the existing arrangement.
