Vol. 392 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

179.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to a claim of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo for school transport having regard to the very isolated locality involved; if she has considered the circumstances of all children from the area concerned, including the medical position of some; if she will sanction the transport claim; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The number of eligible pupils offering for transport from September 1989 was insufficient to warrant the maintenance of the special service to Carrowkennedy national school.

Accordingly, under the terms of the primary school transport scheme it was not open to my Department to continue the service after summer 1989. However, my Department is prepared to offer a grant towards the cost of private transport arrangements to the children who are outside the range of school transport i.e. over three miles from the school.

asked the Minister for Education if an extension of school transport will be approved for a school (details supplied) in County Mayo.

The family in question live less than two miles from their nearest national school and are, therefore, ineligible under the terms of the school transport scheme. My Department can offer them the concession of fare-paying transport on an existing transport service to their nearest school.
