asked the Minister for Finance the reason a tax free allowance has been reduced substantially in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is an old age pensioner; and if he will outline the present position in this case.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that no substantial reduction in the taxpayer's tax-free allowances has occurred. On the basis of the information available to the Inspector of Taxes, the taxpayer's total income for the current year is not likely to exceed the appropriate age exemption threshold of £6,800. Accordingly, he is not liable to income tax for 1989-90. A tax-free allowance certificate granting tax exemption was issued to him on 16 March 1989.
