Vol. 392 No. 7

Written Answers. - Incorporated Law Society.

109.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the attempts made by the Incorporated Law Society to limit the number of people entering for legal education.

The Incorporated Law Society recently announced major changes in the regulations governing admission to their professional law school, the effect of which will be to greatly increase the number of people qualified to enter the law school to study to become solicitors. The principal change is that law graduates of universities in the State, who have passed the six law subjects prescribed by the Law Society at university, will be exempt from the society's entrance examination.

The Law Society expect an intake of up to 400 students next year as a result of the changes, that is more than double the average intake in recent years.

The question of whether the Law Society sought to limit the number of places to be awarded to candidates who sat the entrance examination in 1986, is an issue in a current case that is before the Supreme Court on appeal and is, therefore, sub-judice.
