asked the Minister for the Environment the number of the 26 town commissioners who have applied to him since 1978 for Urban District Council status; the town commissioners which have applied; and the names of those which have been granted.

Two towns having town commissioners have applied for urban status: Shannon and Leixlip. The question of local authority structures generally including changes in existing structures and any possible new structures, is a matter which now falls to be considered in the context of the proposal to establish a select committee of the Oireachtas to examine and report on the whole question of local authority structures, functions and funding.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of Urban District Councils and Town Commissioners which have sought expanded boundaries since 1978; the names of those which have applied; and the names of those which have been granted.

The boundaries of the following urban districts have been extended since 1978: Athy, Bray, Ennis, Longford and Tralee.

Applications are on hands from the following authorities for boundary extensions:

Letterkenny.

Gorey

Newbridge
