Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disruptive Pupils.

282.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the severe disciplinary problem which exists in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 22 where up to 30 children are very disruptive and undisciplined; if so, the steps, if any, she is taking to resolve this problem; if she will adopt the proposal of the report of the Committee on Discipline in Schools published in 1985 which states that "the Department of Education should make provision for the appointment of extra teachers in those schools which have a high concentration of disruptive pupils".

The question of problems of discipline in the school in question has been brought to my attention. This is a matter to be addressed by the board of management in the context of the rules and guidelines on school discipline. Following protracted negotiations with all the relevant educational interests on the recommendations of the report of the Committee on School Discipline my Department issued Circular 7/88 in March 1988 which set out a revised rule and guidelines on school discipline. Some 95 extra teachers have been allocated to schools in disadvantaged areas which are generally the schools experiencing discipline problems. The school in question has such an extra teacher.
