Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Physical Education Programmes.

284.

asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools in which there are timetabled physical education programmes.

Physical education forms part of the primary school curriculum and the teachers' handbook contains broad guidelines on the teaching of physical education.

In keeping with the principles of flexibility and integration inherent in the structure of the curriculum the Department do not lay down specific periods of time for various curriculum activities but advises that there should be time allocated to each aspect of the curriculum each day.

It is the responsibility of the principal teacher, in consultation with school staff to outline a plan of work for the school as a whole and ensure that each area of the curriculum is adequately dealt with in all classes.

The primary curriculum Review Body are examing all aspects of the curriculum at present.
