Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Admission System to UK Universities.

294.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the admission systems of the UK universities and colleges require higher standards of entry from Irish applicants than from their own nationals; and the steps she has taken to ensure parity of treatment for Irish students who apply for places in United Kingdom universities and colleges.

I am not aware that Irish applicants for entry into United Kingdom universities and colleges are required to present a higher standard of qualification than their British counterparts.

The standard of entry to universities in the United Kingdom is a matter for each individual college and is based on A-levels and a points system, with specific requirements for different faculties. The exceptions are Oxford and Cambridge Universities which have a special entrance examination in general knowledge.
