asked the Minister for Education if any subject, apart from Irish, is required to be taken by all students in all classes in second level education; and the reason for the present arrangements in regard to Irish.

The approved course for recognised junior pupils must include the following subjects: (i) Irish, (ii) English, (iii) mathematics, (iv) history and geography, (v) civics and (vi) not less than two other subjects from the approved list of examination subjects.

The approved course for recognised senior pupils must include not fewer than five subjects from the approved list of examination subjects, one of which must be Irish.

Since the foundation of the State it has been the policy of successive Governments to require pupils in our schools to follow an approved course of studies in Irish.
