Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Attainment Targets in Education.

341.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the Department of Education in Britain is introducing attainment targets and assessment arrangements, allowing for variations in ability at the key ages of 7, 11, 14 and 16; if she has any proposals to measure progress in Irish education on a similar or comparable basis; and if she is satisfied that children in need of remedial help are objectively identified in Ireland at a sufficiently early age.

The arrangements being made in Great Britain for assessment at various ages have been noted. The question of assessment in our primary schools is one of the issues currently under discussion by the Primary Curriculum Review Body.

The guidelines on remedial education issued to all primary schools this year stress the need for early identification of learning problems.
