Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pupil Capitation Grant.

350.

asked the Minister for Education the annual capitation grant per pupil paid to national schools; the equivalent grant per pupil paid to all-Irish national schools; the higher costs which occur in all-Irish schools which justify the payment of a higher grant in their case; and if she favours the principle of payment of similar rates of capitation grants to all schools with equivalent running costs and equivalent autonomous local fund raising capacity.

The standard rate of capitation grant is £26.50 per pupil. The rate of capitation grant for all-Irish schools is £39.75 per pupil. The higher rate of grant paid to these schools applies because of their role in the promotion of the Irish language and is not directly related to the running costs of the all-Irish schools compared to other schools.

The financing of schools is one of the issues being examined by the Primary Education Review Committee. Our Programme for Government provided that efforts would be made to improve the level of funding for capitation grants in primary schools as resources become available.
