Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Levies.

46.

asked the Minister for the Environment when the Government will revoke the 1983 legislation which gave power to local authorities to levy local charges and to give effect to the commitment to ensure that local authorities will receive a statutory contribution each year from the Central Exchequer which will be sufficient to provide for a satisfactory level of necessary services.

202.

asked the Minister for the Environment if it is the Government's intention to continue the levying of local charges as a form of local authority financing; if the Government has any plans to replace these with moneys from central funds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 46 and 202 together.

The question of how local authorities should be financed will fall to be considered in the context of the proposal to establish a select committee of the Oireachtas to examine and report on the whole question of local authority funding, structures and functions.
