Vol. 393 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cycle Safety.

104.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any plans to promote the concept of greater care to be taken by cyclists in the evenings, such as the wearing of reflector belts and the necessity to have front and rear lights on their bicycles, in order to avoid the probability of accidents and possible loss of life; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The National Safety Council in their ongoing promotional programme for road safety places particular emphasis on the promotion of cycle safety especially in relation to school children.

One specific element of this programme has been the promotion of the use of reflective clothing and reflectorised belts, known as "Sam Browne Belts" by cyclists. The use and proper maintenance of lights and reflectors, which are required by law, also feature in these promotions.
