Vol. 393 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Questions. - Full-Time Cardiologist.

12.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Health if he intends to appoint a full-time cardiologist to the Mid-Western Health board who would be based at the Regional Hospital in Limerick; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Approval for the creation of new consultant posts is a matter for Comhairle na nOspidéal in the first instance. As the Deputy is aware, discussions on the reorganisation of specialist services in Limerick have been held between the Department, the Mid-Western Health Board, St. John's Hospital and comhairle. Arising from these discussions agreement has been reached that liaison arrangements be established between Limerick Regional and St. John's covering specialities such as medicine, surgery and anaesthetics. Moreover, a number of consultant posts have recently been approved.

I should add that my Department have indicated that the appointment of a cardiologist based at Limerick Regional would be given favourable consideration. The Mid-Western Health Board are examining ways in which resources for such a post might be provided.

(Limerick East): How many cardiologists are there in the country and to which health boards are they attached?

I would not have that information available, but in regard to Limerick Regional Hospital I am very much in favour of the appointment of a consultant who specialises in cardiology.

(Limerick East): Thank you.

Is the Minister aware that a number of reports, including the Health Commission report, have strongly recommended the appointment of additional consultants across the board? What extra numbers does he perceive as being required for 1990 and beyond?

This question specifically refers to the regional hospital in Limerick.

You have just allowed a supplementary in relation to the total number of cardiologists.

That was the question put by the Deputy who tabled the question.

What additional number of cardiologists is it intended to appoint in 1990?

The Deputy is extending the scope of this question. No. 13 please.
