asked the Minister for Finance the steps he proposes to take to relieve people from DIRT tax on small deposits whose main or sole income derives from such interest.

As the Deputy will be aware, the Finance Act, 1986, provides for repayment of deposit interest retention tax deducted from incapacitated persons and persons aged 65 years of age or over who would not otherwise be liable to tax on the relevant interest. I have no plans at present for any changes in the existing legal provisions.
