asked the Minister for Communications if he proposes to set up a Broadcasting Standards Council to monitor the standard of films on television, especially in view of the increase in the number of satellite channels being received in this country.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 24 together.
I am satisfied that the mechanisms which are already in place in regard to broadcasts originating in Ireland obviate the need for a broadcasting standards council. Likewise the new EC Directive on Broadcasting Activities and the Council of Europe Convention on Transfrontier Television provide the necessary safeguards in relation to broadcasts originating from countries which are parties to those requirements.
