Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Income Tax Allowance.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

127 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that local officials of the Revenue Commissioners will accord the full courtesies and legal tax allowance to a person (details supplied) in County Clare in respect of his personal income tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that a review of the taxpayer's liability for the years 1984-85 to 1988-89 carried out in October 1989 took account of all life assurance relief not previously claimed by him. For the current year he is in receipt of all allowances to which he has proved title including relief for the life assurance policies mentioned.

There has been an inordinate amount of correspondence in this case. Since last October, 37 sets of representations from TDs and 14 letters from Mr. Hogan himself have been received by the Revenue Commissioners. Because of the volume of correspondence the inspector of taxes invited Mr. Hogan to his office to discuss his tax affairs. So far Mr. Hogan has not availed of this opportunity.
