Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Sheriff Debt Collections and Remuneration.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

144 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of interest paid to sheriffs in each of the past three years in respect of tax debts collected by them and held on deposit pending its onward payment to the Revenue Commissioners; and the total amount paid in commission to sheriffs in each year since they were given a role in the collection of outstanding tax debts.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that sheriffs are not required, in the monthly returns they make to the Collector-General, to provide particulars of interest or of fees and expenses levied by them on defaulters under the fees orders made by the Minister for Justice. Accordingly, statistics of these amounts are not available.

The general question of sheriff remuneration, including interest, is under review.
