Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Doonbeg (County Clare) Pier.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

164 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Marine if he has examined proposals for Doonbeg Pier, County Clare; and whether they would qualify for Structural Funds.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

165 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Marine if the report on conditions at Doonbeg Pier, County Clare has been furnished to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 164 and 165 together.

The Department of the Marine is at present updating the five-year fishery harbour development programme. I have set up a Fishery Harbour Development Committee within the Department to prepare and monitor this programme. Local authorities have been invited to provide a formal input by submitting a list of projects which they consider to be justified in the fishery interest and towards which they are prepared to make funds available. The Fishery Harbour Development Committee will recommend a set of criteria for assessing demands for harbour investment.

Due consideration will be given to the case for development of landing facilities at Doonbeg in the context of local authorities', including Clare County Council's, proposals for development works in the fishery interest. Pending finalisation of the development Programme, I cannot at this stage say what funds, including EC Structural Funds, could be made available by my Department towards the cost of development works at Doonbeg.
