Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

John Bruton

Ceist:

424 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education when she received the report of the Interdepartmental Committee on means assessment criteria for higher education grants.

The higher education grants scheme is subject to annual ongoing review and is also subject to amendment in the light of such review. Apart from this ongoing review a more detailed review by an interdepartmental committee of the criteria for assessment of eligibility on grounds of means under the higher education and related grant schemes has presented to me in 1988.

The question of determination of income or means for the purposes of eligibility is a complex one affecting a number of Departments and/or agencies under their aegis. I have, therefore, referred back to the interdepartmental committee the question of assessment procedures to be adopted in the context of this problem being relevant to several other Departments e.g. Revenue, Health and Social Welfare.
