Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Class Sizes.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

443 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education, in respect of the school year 1988-89, the estimated number of pupils in classes above her maximum class size regulations of (a) 39 for a single class, (b) 38 for a consecutive grade class and (c) 35 for a multiple grade class; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The school authorities, in particular the principal teacher, are responsible for arranging the organisation of the school so as to ensure that no class-group exceeds 39 (in the case of a single grade class-group), 38 (in the case of a class-group with two consecutive grades), and 35 (in the case of a multigrade class-group).

In all cases where my Department was satisfied that it was impossible for the principal teacher to arrange classes in such a way as to remain within these guidelines an additional teacher was approved to ensure conformity with them.
