There were 176,000 and 172,000 herds listed for testing to private veterinary practitioners in 1988 and 1989 respectively. There were 228,000 tests in 1988 and 233,000 tests in 1989 carried out on these herds of which about 93 per cent were carried out by private practitioners. Details of tests carried out by private practitioners on a county by county basis are not readily available. The total number of herd tests carried out in each county is contained in the enclosed tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
