Vol. 395 No. 7

Written Answers. - Pesticide Products.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

45 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the pesticide products which have been denied access to or have been removed from the Irish market over the last five years due to danger or suspected danger to health; and if he is satisfied with the current monitoring and controlling procedures.

Under the operation of the classification, packaging and labelling of pesticides regulations approximately 75 pesticides have been removed from the market since 1985 because the manufacturing companies failed to satisfy the detailed study information required to conform with the regulations. In a few other cases, manufacturers and distributors have voluntarily withdrawn products from the market while studies are being carried out.

The monitoring and control procedures for pesticides are operated within harmonised EC rules and are of a high international standard. As in the case of individual member states, the EC has a continuous system of monitoring and reviewing their controls in light of new information and/or technological progress.
