Ceist:

45 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money which was spent on the purchase of new books by the library service in each local authority area in the years (a) 1987-88 and (b) 1988-89; the percentage of people in each local authority area who borrow books from the local library service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the operation of the public library service in each area is the responsibility of the local library authority, the information requested is not available in my Department and its compiliation would involve disproportionate time and effort.
