Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Environmental Action Programme.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

245 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the studies which were put in hand immediately, as announced in his environmental action programme, to develop alternative sludge disposal arrangements for Dublin Corporation's continuous programme of dumping sewage sludge at sea; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Dublin Corporation were directed on 22 February last to take the first necessary steps by preparing a detailed brief for the examination of the various options for the treatment and disposal of sewage sludge other than by discharge to the sea. The Corporation have also been directed to prepare a brief for the provision of full secondary treatment facilities at Ringsend and to examine the need for tertiary treatment having regard to the results of studies of nutrient levels in the bay which form part of the work undertaken in connection with the preparation of a Water Quality Management Plan for the Bay.

I am awaiting the submission of the brief by Dublin Corporation.
