Vol. 398 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farm Grant Statistics.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

127 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of grants which have been paid to the farming community in the last ten years; if he will outline the grants paid from the EC in this period; the amounts and purpose for which these grants were paid and the locations per county; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The only grant scheme operated and paid directly by my Department containing elements of special benefit to the farming community, as distinct from schemes aimed solely at the general public, is the group water and sewerage programme. Under this scheme, grants are payable into bank accounts opened by trustees nominated by group members. The following table shows, in respect of each of the last ten years, grant expenditure by my Department on this scheme (including grants paid in respect of non-farmers) and EC recoupments to my Department on foot of this expenditure under the FEOGA Western Package.

The compilation of a list of all the group schemes with farming members which were grant-aided by my Department and the subject of EC recoupment in the last ten years would require an inordinate amount of staff time and resources which would not be warranted.
