Vol. 398 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Policy Development.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Ceist:

13 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Defence if he will ensure that members of the Defence Forces are entitled to participate in the development of policy regarding safety in the work-place, through safety committees and other mechanisms, to achieve the same levels of safety which apply to civilian workers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Extensive safety procedures appropriate to military requirements are in operation throughout the Defence Forces and are reviewed regularly in consultation with relevant personnel. Any developments likely to contribute to safety are monitored with a view to implementation as appropriate.

Will the Minister give a commitment, perhaps in the context of the proposed representative associations, that provision will be made available for the formation of committees, such as safety committees, who will consult on every aspect of safety?

That is very much the sort of welfare area which should be the concern of the representative bodies we discussed at great length recently. I agree with what the Deputy has said.

Can I be sure of the Minister's commitment in this regard?
