Vol. 398 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers.

An chéad cheist chun an Taoisigh.

I tabled a question to the Taoiseach for answer today, to ask him whether he had personally intervened in the matter of the sale of Cablelink and I received a letter from you, Sir, dated 3 May informing me that the question was disallowed on the grounds that it contains argument. I submit to you that my question contains no argument, no allegation, no inference, no imputation of any kind. It simply seeks information.

Deputy Dukes, it seems to me quite improper to raise this matter in this fashion at the commencement of questions. There are procedures in this House for raising such matters.

A Cheann Comhairle——

I have nothing to add to my decision on this matter, Deputy Dukes, and I am proceeding to deal with questions in the ordinary way.

I must ask you, Sir, if you will reconsider that. There is not the slightest tinge of argument in my question and I have examined the Standing Order again very carefully. I ask you, Sir, at the very least that you would restore this question to the Order Paper so that it can be answered tomorrow.

I will not tolerate an intervention of this kind again from any Deputy in this House. It is quite improper that this should happen at the commencement of questions.

I would suggest to you, Sir——

Deputy Dukes, I must ask you to resume your seat.

It seems to me, Sir, far beyond the terms of Standing Orders——

Deputy Dukes, you are taking a mean advantage of the procedures of this House and taking a mean advantage of the Chair.

I am not, Sir. I am trying to assert my rights as a Member of this House to ask a simple question to establish——

I have made a decision in respect of the question. I have given you my reply. I have nothing to add to that reply.

It is a simple question.

I have nothing to add to that reply. I am satisfied about its correctness.

It is deplorable.
